January fares from New York, Chicago, Dallas and Los Angeles show that escaping winter does not necessarily require an expensive flight.

January is one of the easiest months to justify going somewhere warm. The holiday rush is over, much of the Caribbean and Central America is entering its driest stretch, and airfare can look surprisingly reasonable once your dates are flexible.
For this guide, we compared January fares from New York, Chicago, Dallas and Los Angeles. Every destination below had at least one round-trip fare under $400, and seven dropped to roughly $305 or less from at least one origin.

San Juan is the fare that immediately changes the scale of the list. $197 round trip from Chicago, $218 from Dallas and $233 from Los Angeles are prices you could easily spend on a domestic weekend flight.
January weather also does exactly what a winter escape is supposed to do. San Juan's normal daytime high is around 83°F, and the month sits in Puerto Rico's relatively drier winter period.
For U.S. citizens, there is another practical advantage: no passport is required for travel between the mainland and Puerto Rico. Add Old San Juan, the forts, restaurants, nightlife and beaches around Condado and Ocean Park, and this becomes much more than the cheapest ticket in the table.
Best for: the strongest combination of airfare, tropical weather and easy logistics.
Guanacaste is the hottest option here and one of the clearest examples of why your departure city matters.
From New York, the fare dropped to $270 round trip. From Chicago, the same destination was almost $210 more.
January sits right in Guanacaste's dry season. Costa Rica's tourism authority describes December through March as the region's dry period, making this a particularly good time for beaches around Tamarindo, Papagayo and Playa Conchal, as well as hiking and hot springs around Rincón de la Vieja.
Liberia is mainly the gateway. If you have a week, I would choose the coast or split the trip between beach and inland nature rather than treating the airport city as the destination.
Best for: real heat, dry-season weather and a trip that can combine beach and nature.
Cancún has the most useful pricing pattern in this article.
Dallas came in at $270, Chicago at $277 and Los Angeles at $294. Even New York at $346 stays comfortably within the range of a normal winter escape.
January daytime highs sit around 81°F, with cooler evenings than you would get farther south. The advantage is that the weather is generally much easier than the hot, humid summer period.
Cancún also remains one of the easiest destinations here for controlling the total cost. The accommodation market stretches from budget hotels and apartments to enormous all-inclusives, and you can use the same airport for Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen, Valladolid or the wider Riviera Maya.
Best for: the easiest overall budget to control across several U.S. origins.
Punta Cana is a completely different deal depending on which side of the country you start from.
New York at $283 round trip and Chicago at $290 are excellent. Dallas and Los Angeles were both much closer to $500.
January itself is straightforward. Daytime highs sit around 83°F, and this is part of the Dominican Republic's drier winter season.
This is also one destination where I would compare flight-only pricing with vacation packages before booking anything. The resort market is so large that bundling airfare and accommodation can change the real trip cost more than a $30 difference in airfare.
Best for: East Coast and Midwest travelers looking for an uncomplicated tropical resort week.
Puerto Vallarta may have the most balanced pricing of the entire January list.
Chicago was $301, Los Angeles $305, Dallas $313 and New York $339. There is no single origin where the route suddenly becomes unreasonable.
January is also a comfortable month to be there. Rain is uncommon during the winter season, and the days stay warm enough for beaches without the heavy summer humidity. Puerto Vallarta's official tourism guide describes winter temperatures as warm and sunny, with the rainy season concentrated between June and October.
The city itself is what makes the destination work for me. You can walk the Malecón, eat in Zona Romántica, spend a day on the beach and still feel as though you traveled somewhere rather than simply checked into a resort.
Best for: the most consistently priced Mexico trip across all four U.S. origins.
Los Cabos is warm, sunny and very appealing in January.
It is not tropical.
Typical January highs are around 78°F, with much cooler nights than places like Cartagena or Guanacaste. If your winter escape requires sticky 85°F mornings, there are better choices on this list.
From Los Angeles, though, $304 round trip is difficult to ignore. Chicago was almost identical at $307, and Dallas remained reasonable at $331.
January also falls inside Baja California Sur's winter whale season. Pair that with desert landscapes, beaches and comfortable daytime weather, and Cabo becomes more interesting when you stop comparing it directly with the Caribbean.
Best for: sunshine, outdoor weather and particularly strong pricing from the West Coast.
Aruba is the destination I would choose when weather uncertainty annoys me more than paying extra for a hotel.
From New York, the airfare was only $304 round trip. The route becomes much less compelling from Dallas, where the snapshot climbed above $550.
January averages around 81°F, and Aruba receives relatively little rainfall overall. The island's tourism authority lists January rainfall around 2.3 inches and notes that showers are generally brief.
Eagle Beach and Palm Beach make the obvious case for doing nothing. Arikok National Park and the island's rougher eastern side are the reason I would still rent a car for at least a day.
Best for: New York travelers who value predictable winter weather.
Montego Bay lands in a useful middle ground.
It is not the cheapest flight here, but $349 from New York, $383 from Chicago and $391 from Los Angeles are still reasonable for a genuinely tropical January trip.
Daytime highs sit around 83°F, and Jamaica's dry season runs roughly from December through April.
A week also gives you enough time not to treat Montego Bay as the whole country. Negril is an obvious extension if beaches matter most, while the north coast offers several ways to build a more active trip.
As with Punta Cana, resort pricing matters as much as airfare. Check the full trip cost before deciding which Caribbean fare actually saves you money.
Best for: Caribbean heat with plenty of resort choice and room to explore beyond the airport city.
Curaçao is one of the clearest New York-specific opportunities in this snapshot.
New York came in at $366 round trip. Chicago, Dallas and Los Angeles were all substantially more expensive.
The weather side is easier. Curaçao stays tropical year-round, and January through March typically sits around 82°F to 86°F, with warm water throughout the season.
Willemstad is also one of the better cities in this list to actually spend time in. The colorful Handelskade waterfront, neighborhoods and restaurants make Curaçao work even if you do not want an all-inclusive resort, while the western side of the island gives you the smaller beaches and coves.
Best for: New York travelers looking for hot Caribbean weather with more independence than a resort-only trip.
Cartagena is the city-first option.
January highs sit around 87°F, and this is one of the better times of year for hot-weather activities on Colombia's Caribbean coast.
The fare was $366 from New York, with Chicago right at $400. That makes Cartagena particularly interesting if you want real heat but do not want the trip organized around a resort.
The walled city and Getsemaní can easily fill several days with restaurants, plazas and nightlife. Beaches and nearby islands are there when you want them, but they are optional rather than the whole reason for going.
Best for: travelers who want tropical heat, culture and city life in the same trip.
Once the fare difference is only $20 or $40, the airport price stops being the most important part of the decision. I would choose based on weather, accommodation and what I actually wanted to do for the week.
San Juan was the cheapest, with a $197 round-trip fare from Chicago. Dallas was $218 and Los Angeles $233 in the same snapshot.
San Juan, Guanacaste, Cancún, Punta Cana, Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos and Aruba all had at least one fare around $305 or less from one of the four origins.
Guanacaste is the hottest option in this list, around 90°F during the day. Cartagena is also very hot at roughly 87°F, while Curaçao stays in the mid-80s.
San Juan was the lowest fare from Los Angeles at $233, while Cancún, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta were all close to $300.
